Elevator Protection From Floods

The problem

Multi-level apartment blocks and office buildings that are in flood areas have an additional problem in floods.

These buildings almost always have elevator systems, with a significant amount of the control system being housed at the basement level. If these control systems are damaged, it inevitably puts the elevator system out of use immediately.

Normally, this affects a number of such systems in an area, so it is very often the case that the elevator is out of operation for months as buildings wait for elevator companies to work through a backlog of repairs in an area. Many parts need to be imported, so buildings can be without their elevator systems for months.

The solution

SFI has solutions to protect elevator shafts from flood water. This is all based on our Acquastop Classic range. The elevator is used as per normal when there is no risk of floods, and then a barrier is deployed very quickly when required. The solution does not require any base plate in the entry, and special brackets are used that are installed outside the frame of the elevator entrance.

The Outcome

SFI has protected a large number of elevator shafts that protect buildings from both the cost of repair, but also the great inconvenience of not having an operational elevator for months at a time after a flood event.

Acquastop flood barriers

Designed in Italy and protecting homes for 30 years. The barriers are independently tested and used in countries all over the globe. They are rapid to deploy, take up minimal storage space and are highly effective.
