Flood Protection for Parnell Buildings

Parnell was particularly hard-hit during the Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods in January 2023.

The Strand is notorious for flooding. Properties alongside the road have an additional threat as this is the main road to the port, so a number of large container trucks still come through even when the road is underwater and send large swells of water into the buildings.

This is partly what caused such significant damage to Parnell properties in recent flood events.

The need

Parnell businesses suffered immensely during the Anniversary Weekend floods.

The Parnell Business Association estimates that the collective claim from insurance is in the hundreds of millions, and businesses say they have been facing steep premiums and excess increases. Some are reporting exclusions for flood insurance.

The challenge

As businesses tend to have larger buildings with wide openings, securing these against flood waters can be a challenge without the proper protection.

Many businesses use sandbag walls to try to keep the water out, but sandbags are a time-consuming and back-breaking method that isn’t all that effective anyway.

Supply Force isn’t afraid of a challenge, so we have helped several Parnell businesses find a way to stop flood waters in future flood events.

The solution

Supply Force has installed the innovative Acquastop system on a number of properties along The Strand.

The Acquastop system is designed and independently tested to withstand the force of water both when rising due to flood waters, and when it comes with force as when vehicles drive through flooded streets.

The system can be installed on most buildings, no matter how large the openings. We can design special brackets to accommodate most entrances, as is the case on The Strand where the system is installed on everything from aluminium joinery to floor-to-ceiling windows and retail entrances.

We are also able to design the system so that each barrier’s weight is manageable by whoever will be installing it, as is the case on these different properties.
